Followers Are Dead. Subscribers Can Bring More Fulfillment - with Tom Kuegler
Bring all your (Substack) writing questions and your writing dreams to make them come true
Today's session is for you if you need a social media detox and only want to focus on one platform.
At 2 pm EST, you can meet my friend Tom Kuegler.
If you're writing on Substack or thinking about starting an email list, you should DEF come to this.
He ditched hundreds of thousands of followers on YouTube (160K), Medium (63K), Facebook (500K), and LinkedIn (20K) to chase real connections on Substack - instead of feeling pushed to create content he hated to gain more followers, views, and likes.
And, of course, we'll also talk about the many, many tears shed during the process. Can't just cover the easy parts!
Tom is no longer chasing 100K a year with followers and feeding the algorithms.
“I just feel like I'm kind of so sick of what I see on social media half the time, and I feel like Substack is that next evolution in social media where to a more real type of content” Tom shared in our interview.
Now his goal is to hit $100K with subscribers instead of followers.
He’s well on his way.
Within the last 12 months, Tom has grown his Substack newsletter by 11,000 subscribers
Powerful and intimate hour that reveals behind-the-scenes insights
All of you who have been following me for a while know my sessions are value-packed and Tom (although super busy) makes the time to meet us for 60 minutes today.
One powerful and intimate hour that reveals behind-the-scenes insights on what it takes to succeed on Substack as an online writer.
And of course we’re gonna cover the feeling of being invisible to others on Substack (Notes) and how to be seen!
Here’s what we’re gonna cover:
How to write a post that gets read
Why traditional social media is dead
How to use Substack Notes the “right way”
How to create a viral Substack Notes template
How to write so that your readers feel your story
Why Tom blocked me and how we became friends
The status quo of Tom’s business and his plans for 2025
The biggest mistake when writing online and how to fix it
….
What Tom Kuegler thinks about traditional social media
In the summer of 2023, I was an absolute mess.
I hated what I used to love: writing!
I hated it because the incentives of traditional social media put me on an endless hamster wheel for views. It made me write stuff I hated.
On Substack, you see articles do well with titles like "An ode to my shoes." Not clickbait. Not exactly interesting either.
But they do well! How? Because the author built a relationship with their audience through weekly emails. There's trust, and love, and appreciation there. There's a relationship. (…)
What I'm arguing is that Substack can give creators more fulfillment.
It makes writing fun again.
It helps you create your best writing.
It gives you an actual relationship with your audience.
Come meet us! Today (Weds) at 2 pm EST
I think Tom hit the nail on the head.
