How Elna made her first $1,000 writing
I dabbled in some blogging over ten years ago when I was newly married. The internet back then was the wild wild west. Keywords were thrown everywhere, stuffed in posts and in URLs, and it was not unheard of to make a product niche site like zebra print rugs (dot com).
But, I found writing about different products boring and moved on with my life and started university and working with children with autism.
I learned that I loved helping others and teaching.
I’ve learned that getting my first $1,000 from blogging took a marketing plan and a content plan.
I have hundreds of tips on how I achieved my first $1,000 as a blogger, here are 8.
Not every piece of advice in this post made me money or that I have done (I will use them or am using them), but many of these tips helped me make more than $1,000 and collectively helped me create a strong blog foundation so that my blog was ready to make money.
Build a content library. You know that if you invest in content, it will compound over time. Content will keep people on your blog, help you rank in Google, show your credibility, and eventually help you make money. So take the time to build a content library.
Find a niche that supports traffic. It’s all fun and dandy if you want to start a blog on your passions and challenges, but if you don’t know if that specific topic can support traffic, then it won’t be monetizable. It’s true, some sites don’t have a lot of traffic and make thousands a month, but this isn’t the norm, and it shouldn’t be what you think it takes to make $1,000 on your blog.
Look at your competition. How will you know your blog will make money? Look at the top blogs in your niche. Not the big brands, but other bloggers like you. Are there any in your niche? If so, check out their blog. How are they monetizing their site?
Guest post to build an audience. You need an audience to make money. Why not leverage existing audiences on other sites? It’s easier since these sites have thousands or millions of readers, and you get to show your credibility in your topic.
Learn to copywrite. Making money with your blog requires some form of selling. Whether you do affiliate marketing, sponsored content or create your own product, you will have to use copywriting to add persuasion, benefit-driving copy, and elements of scarcity when you write. As a blogger, learn these grease slide copywriting techniques.
Freelance. I started making money within two months of blogging by offering my writing to businesses with freelance writing. I have never looked back. I was able to quickly scale my freelance writing business, and it helped me transition into a coach and product creator — and all of those make me money.
Focus on pain points. One thing that freelance writing taught me was that what I wrote wasn’t for me. It wasn’t a journal entry or my day with my kids. My freelance clients wanted me to write about content marketing, email funnels, and blogger outreach to help other marketers. I immediately had to get in the head of marketers and figure out why did they want to learn this? What was their struggle or pain point with digital marketing? By doing this, I was able to write for that audience and help them directly with my content. This is what you have to do on your blog to grow an audience and help them trust you so you can make sales.
Start a list. This isn’t required to make your first $1,000, but it sure can help! When you get your first few subscribers, treat them like gold. They gave up their email address to hear from you. This is a step closer to getting someone who doesn’t know you to know, like, and trust you. If people don’t know you, don’t like you and don’t trust you, they will not buy from you.

Ktistina, am I subscribed to this?
Thanks for your article - it highlights where I struggle. I want to write for me, but that doesn't pay the bills. So I need to write for others - AS others - in their heads and problems. But that changes day-to-day, so I'm writing for everyone but not building a singular type of audience. Ugh! I need to crack this nut...
