Attendance to all writing techniques, along with following everything, that our leaders may or may not have need of we have to play along because only doing what is right by doing the right thing will bring us more of a success in our Medium writing program along with The Boost Writing Program.
Short writing is like being on a Country Road and looking straight down it and at the same time also wondering and asking yourself whether or not does this road that I'm traveling on have an end to it since at the time I have been travel on it I have seen no end to it, but I have reason it out that if I just keep on traveling I may end up by reaching it or come to some conclude that this road is just too long to travel or continue on. But at the same time we do know that everything has an end and we just have to have some patience so we can stay the course and finish what we stated.
I'm new to everything that is going on with the Boost program, but from this little time that I have been around has given me the chance to learn from some of the best writers from the boost program. This will give me and others who just begin with their writing career to get insight from the real World and Writers who are already made it and now reaching back and trying to give others the same chance to make in by passing on knowledge to other writers. And one day this knowledge will make all who follow great.
LOL!!! Are you Medium's new shill? Should we be "euphoric" that those of us who've stuck with the platform for years will be getting even less than we already are so "newer, unrepresented" writers can get all the glory? I agree with Michelle. So let me get this straight: Medium says they want heartfelt, quality writing, but they really don't. "Oh, look. Another flipflop!"
Hi Sherry, 👋 I recommend reading the replies I left here. I hope the will help better. I'm sorry that you're frustrated about the Boost. I know a lot of people (newbies and senior writers) who benefit from the latest changes.
Keep in mind that the Boost is still in beta so Ariel and her team will improve it over time. In addition starting in September there will be 100 Boost Nominators and therefore more than 100 pubs to nominate your story.
My tip is to become a writer for one of them. I assume you're already a write for several of them, so that puts you in a position of luck!
Do you follow Linda Carroll here on Substack? She's also writing about the Boost and is one of the official Boost Nominators. I bet she or another Nominator such as June Kiri (one of my former students) from Bitchy could give you feedback.
As mentioned above, I recommend watching the replays from Medium Day on how the curators are evaluating stories for Boost to get a deeper understanding.
I really liked what Tom said about hidden gems, and buried stories. I also love that Medium is helping people with no audience, new writers etc but at the same time I see a lot of Boosted stories from more senior writers.
I'm looking forward to a Boost label so we get a feeling for what Medium and the community Nominators are looking for.
Have you watched my other videos about the Boost on YouTube? I think the interview with Ariel also uncovers a lot.
Don't be too hard on yourself. It may take a while to get Boosted and I'm crossing my 🤞🤞!!
I also want to come back to your initial question. Haha. I'm not. Last autumn I decided to move beyond Medium and it was a good decision. I write on Sub, share videos on YouTube and this way I don't put all eggs in one basket anymore. Often I was frustrated about this ever changing platform. Still am sometimes. But I'm lucky to also have other platforms and side hustles. Medium is just one pillar of my online business.
However, I see a positive impact with the Boost and new earnings calculation (but can't write that much because of my new 🐥🍼 baby). So I think there's definetly a huge potential and that's why I started this Boost series.
I read your latest piece about the Boost on Medium, Sherry. Apparently the Boost stirrs a lot of strong emotions (as every change on Medium does). It's a shame people try to game the system but that's what Medium also expected to happen.
I bet you know that back in the day when people were paid for claps there were also writers who tried to boost each other's earnings by simply clapping for each other 50 times. Now the number of claps doesn't matter anymore. One clappers are welcome. 👏
However, I'd like to understand your point more. If you want to you can explain it to me.
That interview seemed to be largely focused on...wait for it...AI. I thought Medium was steering away from that. This interview doesn't do anything to encourage those who write spectacular HUMAN stories.
I'm confused now.
And I agree with Michelle Tehaux. One still needs to be discovered by a boost nominator to even come close to making decent money. I've been submitting to pubs that have the capability but still don't see any improvement.
Hi Kristi, many thanks for joining the discussion. It's really interesting to see how part 3 of my Boost series generates so many negative comments .. and I'm really 😔 sorry that you're feeling this way. Please read my reply to Michele's comment, Kristi.
Tom is one of the 60 and soon 100 Boost Nominators. His pub is focused on stories about generative AI but he's against asking ChatGPT to write a post and then publish it on Medium. Same shared Buster and co on Medium Day. A few months back Medium said it's okay to write with the help of AI as long as it's labelled (nobody really did label it...). Now they are more specific and say they are looking for the magic of the human touch ( as Ariel shared in my interview on YouTube and as shared in part one if the series). So you're 100% right about that! Personal anecdotes, adding your own spin to a story .. that's what Medium is looking for. I also shared several examples from the community on Substack and YouTube. It's great that you already educated yourself on the Boost eligible pubs to get yourself in a position of luck. It's great that you submit your stories with them. Let me ask you: how many stories have you written with the Boost in mind? If my students complain about Medium, I tell them to write at least 100 stories and then decide whether to quit or not. This 100 stories rule really helps
So I'd say: be patient and ask for feedback. You could leave a private note and asking for feedback in regard to Boost. Or you could send a DM or email to one of the Boat Nominators. Tom offers to give feedback (one of the last time stamps in the video). He's an expert for AI/tech but the nominators are connected so maybe he can help you.
Another recommendation is to watch the replay of How Medium Curators Evaluate Stories for Boost. If you participated on Medium Day, you can still watch the replays from the main stage. There you can find further information. If you don't have access, let me know and I'll write a story about it on Medium.
Hope I could help you. You can also join our conversation in Substack's chat. Im thankful for your feedback and am crossing my fingers and toes you'll soon see results .
In answer to your question, I write nearly ALL of my stories with boosting in mind. Before the boost thing I had about an 85% curation rate. I've been on Medium for 4 years with a catalog of nearly 500 stories. Since boosting came about only ONE story has been given the privilege.
Scroll through my profile and you'd see that pretty much all of my stories are significant human experience stories, and they're NOT crappy ones.
Hi Kristi, checked it. You write for several of the Boost eligible pubs and all of your stories are based on your experience. This is 👍. Back in the day 85% curation rate was awesome. Since Tony became Medium's CEO a lot has changed...
Two questions: I wonder 🤔 if you were happy with the results of your Boosted piece and of you see an increase in your earnings based on the new earnings model. You get a lot of engagement and claps (compared to others) and should benefit from this.
I think your stories are definitely Boost worthy. Patience is key. Medium doesn't Boost as many stories as they chose for further distribution.
As Ariel shared in my interview, time has changed. Medium (and the internet) isn't the place it used to be anymore. The old CFFD model is dead.
I've been writing for Medium for 2,5 years now with about 1,800 stories in my library. My curation rate was pretty good as well.
With my meta posts about Medium here on Substack as well as on Medium I always try to encourage and inspire others and hold their hands when things get tough.
Thanks again for sharing your complaints and thoughts about the program!
I thought the Boost program was going to help the best writing be seen by more people. I have not found that to be the case at all. My earnings are down significantly, and the stuff that shows up in my feed is largely of no interest to me. In order to find my favorite writers, I have to manually type their names into the search bar. If you do not fit into certain niches, you are much less likely to be Boosted. The types of things I like to read also seem not to be Boosted. I have to go looking for them. I think the Boost might work well for a certain segment of people who like certain topics. If you came to Medium to look for good, thoughtful, original writing, you can kind of forget it. It's so hard to find that now.
Michelle, I am really sorry to hear that. I recommend Yana's reply. She built a strong community over years and now she benefits in two ways from Medium's latest changes: the new earnings calculation prefers engagement and the Boost is primarily for personal stories. I love that Tom points out that he's looking for human touch, personal experience, subject matter expertise, that you can add your own spin to a story etc. Do you already publish your pieces with one of the Boost eligible publications? There soon will be 100 which means more topics will be covered. There's a reason why I decided to write on Substack and create videos for YouTube: Medium is changing a lot. Often not for the better. But this new earnings calculation and Boost can really be a game changer. I've seen and shared several examples. Maybe you could contact Tom (one of the last time stamps in the video) and ask him for advice. He's Boost Nominator for stories about generative AI but maybe he can help you. The Nominators are connected.
One more thing about the feed. I know it's a mess! You could go into your recommendations, change them and or clean your history. I do this once in a week and it really helps to make my feed better!
Thanks for joining our discussion in the chat!
I copy and pasted my reply and added some further information.
Keep on keeping on and I'll leave a private note on Medium with some more specific tips.
Ad shared there's a reason I started my Substack and YouTube channel. Medium changes a lot and this can really s*ck. I think this time it's different that's why I tried to give you with my behind the scenes interview an unfair advantage since Ariel and Tom are great inspiration. Keep in mind the Boost is in beta and they will improve/ iterate it.
Hugs and fingers and toes crossed!!
I really hope you won't leave Medium frustrated. I know you could also do something else with your time . Also yourself: WHY am I writing on Medium?
Purpose always helps me in times I feel frustrated. At the moment I am because I can't write as much as I'd love to because of my newborn.
Thanks again for your live tank tip! Talked with my hubby about it. You're definitely right. She's lying on my belly now and I'm typing these lines. 😂

You missed my point, but good try. I’ll let you get back to your baby now.

Sure 😊 I hope I'll see your posts more often in my feed now and can support you this way. The read ratio is part of the new earnings calculation.
Fingers crossed one of your opinion pieces will be Boosted soon. Let me know once it happens.
Thanks, Kristina.
