How To Become a Top Writer on Medium in 2023
I created a new YouTube video and a free list for you. If I can do it, you can do it too!
I see many new writers on Medium who use tags (=labels) that don’t have any chance of earning them a Top Writer badge.
Why?
⚠️Because they aren’t eligible for Top Writer status.
I’ve received more than 30 Top Writer badges since I started writing on Medium two years ago.
Within my first month on Medium, I unexpectedly became a Top Writer in #Parenting.
This badge surprised me!
I didn’t know about this concept that allows you to become more searchable on Medium.
Within the upcoming months, I’ve gained 29 more shiny badges. This wasn’t by surprise anymore.
This happened strategically.

The most important thing when you want to become Medium’s next Top Writer is you need to know which tags are eligible for Top Writer status.
Unfortunately, Medium doesn’t provide a list.
So I did some research and want to share the list with you today.

Oh, one more thing:
Here’s how to tag and change tags
Go to the draft you want to add tags to.
Click Publish.
Chose Change tags.
Type in your tags.
Press Enter to confirm.
In my example, the views, claps, and comments will only count toward Top Writer status in #Short Story and #Parenting.
Only these two tags can gain you a Top Writer badge.
❌ #Family and so on don’t belong to the most popular tags on Medium. They won’t make you a Top Writer.
👍 Pro tip: You have 5 tags. Use several tags to specify your content and add Top Writer tags as well.
